Daytona Man Arrested After Crashing Into SUV With Newborn Inside

Daytona Beach, FL - An attempt by police to catch a gun-wielding dollar store robber leads to unrelated charges for a 27-year-old Daytona Beach man with a criminal past.

Shawn C. Irving is held without bond at Volusia County Jail on five felonies - including trafficking in heroin and hydrocodone as well as cocaine possession with intent to sell - after his attempt to flee from police in heavy rain ended with him crashing head-first into a Dodge Durango with a family of three inside, including a newborn baby.

The Daytona Beach Police Department says it all started soon after a Dollar General on West International Speedway Boulevard was robbed Monday afternoon.

Officers on the lookout for a dark-colored Chevy Camaro which the robbery suspect fled the scene in found Irving behind the wheel of a 2018 black Camaro heading westbound on Bellevue Avenue towards South Nova Road, according to his arrest report.

Two marked DBPD patrol cars followed Irving's vehicle into a Sunoco gas station, where he drove right through the pump area without stopping and into a nearby parking lot.

Per the report, that's when Irving blew through a stop sign and "recklessly" went into traffic heading west on Bellevue, leading to officers turning on lights and sirens to start a pursuit.

DBPD says Irving got up to 80 mph at one point before he lost control of the Camaro in the rain and failed to get by a curb, striking the vehicle with the baby inside. Officers took him into custody after a brief attempt to flee the scene.

Also taken into custody was a 16-year-old girl inside the Camaro with Irving. She was identified in the report as his girlfriend and charged as a juvenile with marijuana possession after the crash.

It was while processing the Camaro that DBPD found at least 6.5 grams of heroin, 8.4 grams of cocaine, a digital scale with cocaine residue, 6.3 grams of hydrocodone pills and around $1,500 in cash in Irving's pockets.

According to the report, Irving is a twice-convicted felon who was also in possession of a Glock handgun when police caught up to him.

No serious injuries were reported, including to the newborn.
