DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - A historic business in Daytona Beach is coming up on a storied anniversary celebration. The Daytona Beach Racing & Card Club will hold events honoring their 75th anniversary this coming weekend.
The club first opened its doors on June 2nd, 1948, at the time known as the Volusia Kennel Club. They charged 25 cents admission and held bets on ten dog races; the total money wagered came out to $53,708. Their release states that the institution was purchased in 1958 by John Masoni of Cleveland, who poured over $300,000 into renovations.
The club became part of Delaware North Companies in 1987, a partnership that has continued to this day. The club was affected by the 2018 passage of Amendment 13, a statewide provision banning gambling on dog races. The name 'Daytona Beach Racing & Card Club' became official around that time, moving the club into its modern iteration.
A schedule of events is planned for the weekend to celebrate the 75th anniversary. Saturday will feature a Caribbean Posse Music concert at 2:00 pm, a Belmont Race Day Cash Drawing at 4:00 pm, and a t-shirt giveaway at 5:00 pm. On Sunday there will be multiple poker games with bonus prizes.
