Volusia County, FL - Volusia County Council has an amendment on its Thursday morning agenda to fund two homeless shelters- Hope Place in Daytona Beach and DeLand's Neighborhood Center in West Volusia.
The County Council already voted in May to fund the shelters, but the Council must approve the budget amendments for Thursday in order for the funding to move forward.
For Hope Place, expected to open late this summer at the corner of Derbyshire Rd. and Wright St. in Daytona, the County Council is expected to approve an amendment authorizing an additional capital grant of $327,000 for improvements. That's a total capital grants award of over $3.8 million for Hope Place.
The County is also expected to give up to $400,000 to Hope Place to assist with the first year of its operating costs. The money for operating costs will be equal to the amount of money that Halifax Urban Ministries receives through non-governmental cash donations and contributions. Halifax Urban Ministries is the non-profit organization that will run Hope Place.
For the DeLand Neighborhood Center at 434 Woodland Blvd., the County is expected to approve an amendment for up to $125,000 to go toward operating costs of the facility. The City of DeLand has been raising both public and private funds for operating Neighborhood Center.
This would be the second County amendment for Neighborhood Center's funding, and it states that the funding agreement is contingent on a notice that residents have occupied the facility and an audited financial statement from the City of DeLand showing contributions for the facility.
