DeLeon Springs, FL - The Volusia County Council approves the building of two new trail segments in the DeLeon Springs area.

And the total cost for the project will cost upwards of $1.2 million.

Everything was given the greenlight after the council awarded two construction contracts yesterday (April 21st). The first project is for the building of an approximately 1.2-mile leg of the Spring-To-Spring Trail. Once that's finished, the Spring-to-Spring Trail will stretch across 26 miles from Gemini Springs Park in DeBary, all the way north to DeLeon Springs State Park.

The new segment will begin at Grand Avenue and Baxter Street, before following a path along Baxter Street and Ponce Deleon Springs Boulevard, through the woods and to Spring Garden Avenue’s intersection with US 17.

The first contract – which is worth $925,769 – was awarded to Halifax Paving, Inc., with the construction funds coming from a state SUN Trail grant. Construction is expected to take about nine months.

The second project will connect the Spring-To-Spring Trail segmentabove to just east of the entrances to DeLeon Springs State Park and thecounty’s Chuck Lennon Park. The second contact – worth around $314,202 – was awarded to Built-Rite Construction of Central Florida, Inc. and their work is expected to take about six months to complete.

This project is also being funded by the county’s ECHO program.

“This has been in the works for years, and the funding sources have already been identified,” said Councilwoman Deb Denys. “I think this is a really great story.”

Tadd Kasbeer, Volusia County Engineering and Construction Director, told council members that the state has future plans extend the Spring-to-Spring trail even further north toward the Pierson and Seville area, funding permitting.
