Convicted Felon Running From Deputies Caught In Dumpster

South Daytona, FL - A Daytona Beach man with four prior felony convictions ends up in Volusia County Jail again after he tried to evade deputies by hiding in a dumpster. 23-year-old Treshawn I. Lovett is out on $8,000 bond following his arrest on New Year's Eve in a parking lot near the International Academy of Hair Design on U.S. 1 in South Daytona. According to the arrest report, a Volusia County Sheriff's Office deputy spotted Lovett on Third Street near Derbyshire Park in Daytona Beach around 9:30 p.m. that night behind the wheel of a white four-door Volkswagon which was speeding with no headlights on. Lovett refused to stop when the deputy turned on his lights, running a red light as he crossed Nova Road, per the report. That's when the deputy requested assistance from Air One, the VCSO helicopter, which was hovering in the area. Air One's crew managed to track the Volkswagon soon afterward and followed it into South Daytona, where the driver abandoned the vehicle along Banana Cay Drive and ran northeast towards the International Academy, eventually taking refuge in a dumpster on the northwest side of the parking lot.

When questioned afterward, Lovett told officers he ran because he was "nervous" about a patrol car passing by his mother's house and because he was out on bond for an August incident in which he claims he stabbed a man who was trying to rape him. Lovett also admitted to having a gun in the car he abandoned, which is where VCSO found a .40 caliber Glock with 13 rounds of ammunition. It was located "in plain view" on the floorboard of the vehicle, per the report. VCSO charged Lovett with felony counts of fleeing & eluding law enforcement and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon as well as a misdemeanor for driving with a suspended license. VCJ records show Lovett's been booked there seven other times since September 2014, including the incident over the summer and on a battery charge in April.
