Challenge Daytona Festival Weekend Begins Tomorrow

Daytona Beach, FL - Challenge Daytona, a three-day athletic event, is at Daytona International Speedway for the second year. It was voted "Best New Race 2018" by Triathlete Magazine.

The ChallengeDaytona Festival has an event for every athlete, whether you practice every day or only on occasion. Daytona International Speedway spokesperson Andrew Booth said there a number of events that anyone can take part in on Saturday and Sunday. If your sport is being a spectator, there's no charge for that.

Though no athletic events are scheduled for today, the festival is underway. Gates open at noon with the Challenge Daytona Village and Expo set up in the Fanzone. Between noon and 5 p.m., if you're up for it, you can take part in the VIP Hot Lap Experience. For $125, you can ride shotgun in a NASCAR pace car for three laps around the track. You can ride in the backseat for $75.

Saturday, the athletes take over the track. Check-in and registration for the Triathlon, Duathlon, the Junior Challenge Triathlon and the Middle Distance: Triathlon, Aquabike, and Duathlon begins at 5 a.m. Booth says there are a lot of different things for families to do as well as athletes. "It's a unique setting for us to have a race of the two feet kind instead of the four wheels."

Booth said there are more than 1,500 competitors registered for the weekend, many of them coming from other parts of the world. He said this event shows the diversity of the DIS event calendar. "We can host hard rock concerts, we can have the races, we can have the car shows, and then we can have a triathlon as well. It goes to the types of facilities that we have here, that we can provide the services to these athletes that come in. A unique setting with the track, with the lake. It shows that the World Center of Racing can be the World Center of Entertainment as well."
