Bunnell Police Chief Trying To Protect Residents From Holiday Burglars

Bunnell, FL - The Bunnell Police Chief says you shouldn't leave boxes in your yard that might let criminals know what you got for Christmas - and he's providing a drop-off location for recycling boxes to help ease the burden.

"Put yourself in a burglar's position," said Chief Tom Foster. "We identify items by the boxes that are in front of residents homes. So if I'm looking for a TV and I see a large screen TV box outside, usually that's a good indication that there's a new TV... just what I need."

So to stay safe through the holidays Foster is asking residents to recycle their empty gift boxes by dropping them off at the Police Chief's burglar box depot, provided by the Solid Waste Department. The bins are located behind the Coquina building, or old City Hall, at 200 S Church St. The bins will be there until January 6.

This kind of crime is more prevalent during the holidays when people are receiving gifts, but criminals could target residents at any point during the year if they see boxes and suspect valuables are in the home - so it's not a bad idea to cut up boxes and put them in the trash can where no one can see what you have.
