Both Volusia School Board Races Head to Runoffs

Posted

Both of the two races on the ballot Tuesday for the Volusia School Board will be headed to runoff elections on the November ballot. Each race drew three candidates, with the top two advancing.

District 2

The District 2 was comprised of Cassie Gonyer, Krista Goodrich, and Angela Kopnicky. The incumbent Board member, Anita Burnette, decided against running for re-election, opening up the seat to a new member. Goodrich fell just short of winning over half the vote, but placed easily high enough to make the runoff. By a margin of less than a thousand votes, Gonyer secured the second runoff spot over Kopnicky.

  1. Krista Goodrich - 45.88% - 6,585 (advanced)
  2. Cassie Gonyer - 30.04% - 4,312 (advanced)
  3. Angela Kopnicky - 24.08% - 3,456

District 4

In District 4, incumbent Board member Carl Persis declared for re-election to defend his seat against two challengers: Donna Brosemer and Sarah Marzilli. Persis had no problems making the runoff at least, but he did not receive the most votes out of the three candidates. That distinction went to Brosemer, who bested Persis' total by nearly a thousand votes. Marzilli finished a distant third, well out of the running to keep her campaign alive.

  1. Donna Brosemer - 43.73% - 9,598
  2. Carl Persis - 39.60% - 8,691
  3. Sarah Marzilli - 16.67% - 3,658
