APL Moves Daytona Beach Tryout To Cocoa Beach

Daytona Beach, FL - The professional spring football league Daytona Beach will be a part of when it kicks off its first season later this year will not hold a tryout at Daytona Stadium after all. Days after canceling its tryout session due to lack of space, the American Patriot League opts to also cancel its Houston tryout originally scheduled for later this week. In its place, the APL will hold one massive tryout for over 800 players at Cocoa Beach at the beginning of February.

League officials say neither Daytona Beach nor Houston's Rice Stadium had enough area to properly evaluate that many players, while Cocoa's Coastal Florida Sports Park gives them up to eight fields. The APL had already reserved those fields for each team's individual training camps. As with the other APL tryouts, this event is invitation only, with an application deadline of January 15th. The league's draft and training camps will take place once these tryouts are done. APL officials say at least four more cities will join the league before the draft takes place, joining Daytona Beach, Mobile, Sacramento and Shreveport. Prior to that, the league expects to announce the three finalists of the "name the team" contest for Daytona Beach, with at least 174 names submitted so far. A fan vote between those three will decide the team's new name. The first game is scheduled for March of this year.
