New Smyrna Beach, FL - A 93-year-old woman made 850 teddy bears by hand to donate to kids in the emergency room at Florida Hospital New Smyrna. Geneva Wetzel, a great grandmother of 12, took 7 years to knit all 850 bears. “I enjoying doing it and it is for a good cause. I hope the children enjoy it too,” says Wetzel. “I hope it lights up their eyes a little bit and makes them feel a little bit better. I know they are sick when they come in here, so I hope it helps them.”

The coordinator of the community outreach program Wetzel works, Bonnie Bullock, is appreciative of what Wetzel is able to do for kids. She says that it helps kids that are often scared by being in the hospital. “We hope these smiling, cuddly bears will ease their fears,” Bullock said. “We are just so grateful for Geneva. With these bears, she’s helping us create a special moment for children in need of medical care.” Photo courtesy Florida Hospital New Smyrna. Copyright Southern Stone Communications 2017.
