Daytona Beach, FL - During the Coke Zero 400 Race Weekend, 3 Medal of Honor recipients will be acknowledged at Daytona International Speedway as part of a more than 40-year-old tradition.
The tradition, began in the 1970s by Daytona International Speedway and NASCAR founder, Bill France Sr., will honor Vietnam veterans Captain Thomas Kelly, U.S. Navy, Command Sergeant Major Gary Littrell, U.S. Army and Colonel Walter Joseph Marm, U.S. Army this year. It is the 9th year in a row that recipients will be honored during the Coke Zero 400 Race Weekend.
The Medal of Honor is the U.S. Government's highest award given to a member of the Armed Forces. Recipients have risked their lives to defend the United States, giving more effort than the call of duty requires. For information on Medal of Honor recipients, go here.
On Friday, June 30, these Medal of Honor recipients will attend a luncheon at the Daytona International Speedway Bill France Room inside the Ticket and Tours Building. They will also attend:
“These three men have gone beyond the call of duty in their service to our country,” says Chip Wile, Daytona International Speedway President. “Throughout the race weekend, it will be an honor and privilege for the NASCAR community to salute these three men for their extraordinary actions and service to our country.”
