16th State Of Emergency Extension Planned, Relaunch Volusia Adding Veterans' Organization Support

DeLand, FL - County documents show that council members plan on extending Volusia's state of emergency for the 16th time as one assistance program adds new language that benefits the county's veterans' organizations.

That will all be up for discussion come the county council's next meeting, which is scheduled for June 30th, the same day that the current extension is set to expire.

Approval of the new extension is likely, as the agenda item recommends that it passes.

The local state of emergency was put into effect on March 12th, following similar declarations made by multiple municipalities and the state. Since then, each emergency declaration has been extended by seven days, which is a limit set by the state.

As of yesterday (June 22nd), Volusia County has seen a total of 1,263 positive cases of COVID-19 and 53 COVID-19 related deaths.

Cases have also increased dramatically in the state of Florida. Since the start of June, the state has added over 40,000 cases. Just yesterday (June 22nd) the state broke 100,000 cases. Just a couple of days before that, Volusia exceeded 1,000 cases.

Council members are also expected to pass a revision to the county's Relaunch Volusia program, which is aimed at assisting businesses and residents affected by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

This revision will change the current small business reopening grant program, which already supports 501(c)(3) non-profits, to add assistance for 501(c)(19) Veterans' organizations.

The county is also expected to pay $251,918.35 to Orlando-based Westbrook Service Corporation for a number of ultraviolet-C germicidal air handler treatment systems. That agenda item states that the funds for that purchase will come from the county's COVID-19 relief fund since the project will deal with building sanitation.
