Learn About Peculiar Persons In Florida History

Posted

Port Orange, FL- After being exiled from France in the 1820s, Napoleon Bonaparte’s

eccentric nephew, Achille Murat, settled in Florida, where he fought

Indians, ate turkey buzzards, and threw dinner parties at his

Tallahassee plantation. But he disliked changing his clothes, refused to

bathe, and used a shaggy dog as a spittoon. He became known as the

Prince of Tallahassee.

Learn about Murat and other peculiar persons in Florida history during

a free presentation at 2 p.m. Friday, June 9, at the Port Orange

Regional Library, 1005 City Center Circle. Zach Zacharias, the senior

curator of education and history at the Museum of Arts & Science, will

shed light on the lives of crazy cowboy Bone Mizell, soldier of fortune

William Augustus Bowles, 18th century settler Denys Rolle, and others.

Reservations are not required. For more information, call the library

at 386-322-5152, option 4.
