Join The Conversation About Volusia County’s Increasing Water Concerns

Volusia County, FL-Volusia Water Alliance will host a Fall Symposium focused on Volusia’s natural water resources on Friday, October 27, 2017, at the Sanborn Center in DeLand. The public is invited to attend this free event which will begin with free coffee and donuts at 9:00 am. Event sponsors and participants include the City of DeLand, Stetson University’s Institute for Water and Environmental Resilience, and the Blue Spring Alliance, among others.

During the morning session, short presentations by local governments and water professionals will highlight current technical approaches to proposed solutions to water quantity and quality challenges. The morning session will be moderated by Jane Durocher, Middle Basin Advocacy Director for St. Johns Riverkeeper.

At 11:30 am, the lunch session will feature a big-screen presentation of Water’s Journey: The Hidden Rivers of Florida. The film follows a team of cave divers navigating the underground Floridan aquifer beneath our feet which is the source of our drinking water. An optional catered lunch of hearty organic wraps and baked chips will be available for $11, prepaid with advance registration at the VolusiaWater.org website.

The afternoon session will begin at 12:00 pm consisting of educational and inspiring public-oriented presentations moderated by Clay Henderson, Executive Director of Stetson University’s Institute for Water and Environmental Resilience. Topics will include water levels and flows, protection and recovery strategies, saving our springs, and an update on the St. Johns River. A distinguished list of speakers is featured on the website.

The presentations will be followed by small-group round-table discussions aimed at community activities facilitating solutions, awareness, and participation.

The event will conclude with a casual “Beer Review” hosted by Persimmon Hollow Brewing Company in downtown DeLand, featuring a guided tasting tour of the brewery.
