sun bicycle DeLand, FL– The DeLand Police Department is partnering with the Flagler Area Southern Off-Road Bicycling Association and the International Mountain Bicycling Association to celebrate Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day. The free event, designed to teach school-aged children how to safely ride their bicycles, will be from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, June 11 at Chuck Lennon Park, 5000 Greenfield Dairy Road, De Leon Springs, FL 32130. “Bike safety is extremely important for our children, especially now that school’s out,” said Police Chief Bill Ridgway. The day will include an introduction to off-road biking at the Chuck Lennon mountain biking trails, experiencing nature and learning routine bicycle maintenance tips. Riders can practice on a “skills course” before trying the trail. Children will also be able to meet police officers, get their picture taken alongside a police motorcycle and have their bike speed “clocked” by a radar gun. Police officers will also provide a police escort from the staging area to the novice trail entrance to begin the trail ride guided by experienced, adult trail riders. Children ages 5 to 15 are invited to attend. Participants will need to bring a bike in working condition with “trail tires.” All riders must wear a helmet. A limited supply of reconditioned bikes and helmets will be available. Parents are highly encouraged to join their children for the ride, too. Participation for this event will be limited and riders must pre-register. To register, visit https://www.bikereg.com/take-a-kid-mountain-biking-day.
