DeLand, FL– The DeLand Police Department is inviting residents to an event that will promote building relationships with the police officers that patrol the city’s streets.

On Saturday, April 28 at the Sanborn Events Center, 815 S. Alabama Avenue, officers from the DeLand Police Department will be on hand to meet with members of the community to develop, strengthen and revitalize relationships. It will also help participants gain a better understanding of basic federal, state and local laws.

The event titled "The Law and Your Community" is co-sponsored by the newly formed Police Community Advisory Council and is geared toward youth ages 13 to 18 but anyone is welcome.

The event will include coffee and donuts beginning at 9 a.m. followed by a presentation from some of the city’s police officers and a representative from the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives.

At the conclusion of the event, DeLand Police Officers will participate in a pickup basketball game at Earl Brown Park versus youth interested in playing.

“Our goal is to create a dialogue and begin to build relationships with our residents,” said Police Chief Jason Umberger, “so that in the future when our officers interact with the public we can create positive outcomes.”
